Prerequisites:
- Hold at least a current private pilot certificate and a current 3rd class or better medical, valid through expected completion time.
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet any of these requirements due to a medical condition, the Administrator may place such operating limitations on the applicant’s pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft;
- Pass the required knowledge test. We can help with this, please call. We can shrink study time down to three days maximum.
- 40 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, of which 10 hours must have been in an airplane. If you are close, we can make accommodations for this. Much of your training will be on ‘cross-country’ flights mimicking what you will be doing once instrument rated.
- Airworthy airplane: Current annual, pitot-static and transponder check. A fresh oil change is a must as you will likely fly 40-45 hours in commuting and taking the course.
- Current insurance coverage.
Materials:
- View limiting device: Find something comfortable that you like (foggles, hood, etc)
- Flight Computer: E-6B – manual, you may bring a digital in addition. Paper Version.
- Plotter: VFR and IFR scales
- One set of current VFR and IFR charts for the southeast. Once you schedule we will decide the training area based on time of the year.
- Comfortable headset. I use the Bose.
- Kneeboard or clipboard. I use http://www.flyboys.com/fb1316.html
- Flashlight in case of electrical failure (we will simulate this.) My favorite: http://www.flyboys.com/sfhs2-a.html
*If you wish to be trained on iPad and Foreflight, have a current subscription. All training up to the 25-30 hour point will be “old school” (link). A Straus 2 ADSB receiver is available for your use. If you do not own an iPad or use Foreflight, I can demo it for you during our cross country phase.
